The Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14

IMG_1689The Balvenie is a well known Speyside distillery with a rich history and commitment to tradition. We’ve tried a portion of their range and recently sampled the Caribbean Cask 14 year old. Rum cask whiskeys are generally sweeter than normal and tend to accentuate vanilla notes. This 14 year old rolls out with sweet caramel and opens up into a round, mildy intense body. Very nice vanilla-rum flavors are present throughout. It finishes smooth, leaving you with a forceful urge to refill your glass. We compared this Balvenie with a Bruichladdich 17 year old rum cask, (we’ll post our review of this one soon) and we found the flavors comprable. The only major difference being a higher complexity profile with the Bruichladdich. However, we concur that The Balvenie at $63 vs. The Bruichladdich at $100 is a complexity/price range trade worth making. Next time we decide to add a rum cask scotch to our collection, The Balvenie Caribbean Cask will get the nod. Locally available at Gates Circle Liquor for $73. Rating: 91/100

I am a big fan of the Aberlour A’bunadh, will I be very disappointed if I try this one? I have never tried a Balvenie that I thought was very good to include the 21 portwood and 17

    • The Aberlour A’bunadh is an excellent sherry cask strength whiskey; strong and full bodied, with lots of depth. We needed to cut it down with a little more water than usual to get it just right… The Balvenie Caribbean cask 14 is an excellent buy for the money. We haven’t yet sampled the 17 or 21…
