Ardbeg 10

IMG_3035BWG’s October theme of smoked whiskies brings us to a mainstay of the whisky world – the famously smokey Ardbeg 10. This celebrated whisky is marked “The Ultimate Islay Single Malt” on the label and was considered as such by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2008. The Ardbeg 10 opens up with a massive surge of peat smoke. Salty sea water accompanies the smoke – and not a soft roller, but a huge breaking wave. After sitting in your glass for a while, a fruity zest of savory peach can be found hiding underneath the peat and salt. The palate brings no surprises and continues the intense, quintessentially Ardbeg tangy peat, salty brine and subtle fruit. A touch of water tames this beast’s intensity without sacrificing it’s flavor. The finish is lasting and smokey, continuing long after your glass is empty. The Ardbeg 10 is a great fall/winter whisky and can be found in just about every liquor store and most bars. Locally available at Gates Circle Liquor for $63. Rating: 90/100.
