Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey

deadRogue, best known for their craft beer, wowed us last fall when we first sampled their single malt whisky. We were surprised by its drinkability and charming flavors (read that review here). Rogue’s signature beer is their rich and malty Dead Guy Ale, made in the style of a German Maibock. Rogue’s Dead Guy Whiskey is brewed and distilled using the same malts and ingredients used in making the Dead Guy Ale. It is then aged for one month in oak barrels. Just as with the single malt, we were pleasantly surprised by the Dead Guy Whiskey’s drinkability. Citrus and orange honeysuckle wafts generously on the nose. On the palate, seasoning and orange peel are balanced well with a delicate salty/sweetness. It finishes bright and clear, leaving your mouth with a warm, quaffable feel. Both of the whiskies Rogue offers are noticeably young and thusly, elemental and noncomplex, but for its style and price point, the Dead Guy Whiskey is a great buy. Locally available at Gates Circle Liquors for $44. Rating: 88/100.
