Whistle Pig Rye

pig_2Whistle Pig, is a distillery that resides on a fully functional 230 acre Vermont farm. The Whistle Pig farm traces its origins all the way back to the 1750’s and the French and Indian war. In the summer of 2013 Whistle Pig was certified organic by the FDA. They harvest and produce hay and rye grain, maple syrup – and yes, they actually raise pigs. Whistle Pig raises Mangalitsas pigs, a premium, rare breed indigenous to Hungary. Mangalitsas pigs are known for their dense furry hide and thick and succulent, marbled meat. BWG’s first foray into Whistle Pig begins with their flagship 100 proof Straight Rye Whiskey. The nose is beautifully complex right off the bat. Orange peel zest, peaches, sugar glazed doughnuts, allspice and nutmeg swirl around in the Whistle Pig’s pungent, sweet and savory nose. The body is weighty, with intense flavors that are less individually complex than on the nose. A spicy fireball cinnamon flavor comes out towards the finish, which is tightly wound and a bit short. The Whistle Pig Straight Rye has a world class nose and pitches slightly downward from there. It is still and excellent rye whiskey and we look forward to trying more from Whistle Pig in the near future… Locally available at Gates Circle Liquors for $68. Rating: 90/100.
