Laphroaig Quarter Cask

laph_QCLaphroaig Quarter Cask is named for its old world style aging process. Quarter casks are pretty much exactly what they sound like. Laphroaig takes whisky from their standard bourbon barrels and finishes it in quarter casks (or barrels) that are roughly one quarter the size of a normal cask. This is done so that the liquid has more surface area contact with the charred inner lining of the barrel, creating a different flavor. Laphroaig claims that their Quarter Cask bottling has a softer, more easy going edge that compliments their distinct intense peatiness. The Quarter Cask’s fragrance is full bodied Laphroaig and straight up peat smoke. Dried grassy iodine flavors with sweet toffee aromas round out the rest of the nose. The palate adds more sweetness and a nice chili spice which balances well with the peat and oak. The finish is long and smokey. As with most Laphroaigs, the Quarter Cask does smokey, and does it well… Locally available at Gates Circle Liquors for $62. Rating: 90/100.
